Tums never work for me. Try Gaviscon instead. I learned that after my first daughter was born when I was in the hospital and they kept bringing me "gas pills" that actually helped and I finally asked what it was. Turns out they were just giving me Extra Strength Gaviscon, which you can buy in any drug store. (Although even that gets beat out by the heartburn some days).
NG is right - and the liquid stuff you can drink is even better, really seems to coat quickly. I asked my midwife if I could OD on it. Basically you will just get really constipated if you drink the whole bottle. But chase down some stool softener with a bottle of maalox and you are good to go. Isn't pregnancy fun?
Tums are the devil. They give the promise of relief but never come through. About the only thing that has worked so far for me is Pepcid AC. It's on my OK list of meds. ;-)

Gotta love the heart burn.
