Breastfeeding issues

I'm in such pain every time I nurse Carter. Like, toe-curling, jump-out-of-your-seat, grit your teeth and grunt, pain. Bad stuff. Takes me back to the early days when Carter was first born. I couldn't speak for the first minute of nursing him, it hurt so bad.

I thought it was yeast, since I was on antibiotics for so long. Went to the doctor and she prescribed Nystatin. Tried it for a few days...no change.

I just talked to one of my La Leche leaders and she said sometimes when babies are teething, their latch changes because they're uncomfortable. She suggested giving him a frozen washcloth to gnaw on before nursing to numb his gums a little. Man, I hope that helps because I can't take much more.

I found that it took many many DAYS for the Nystatin to finally work so if the washcloth thing doesn't work, I'd investigate the thrush issue too. I know with Bryce we both had to be treated (him with an oral med) b/c even though he had no symptoms I DID!

Best of luck - it totally sucks to be in pain when you're nursing!!!

I hope it starts going easier soon!

Try Hyland's Teething Tablets - they are homeopathic, if he seems like he's in pain or discomfort. I'd continue the Nystatin(just in case, like Erika said, it does take awhile) while trying the washcloth thing. Sydney chewed on them when teething because she hated the frozen teething things. Hang in there...

I hope that helps! We went through a period a couple of months ago where Lucas was biting down while he was nursing (mostly at night) and it was awful!

Are you ovulating? I know you posted that AF returned. Sometimes the pain can be associated with ovulation and pass in a couple of days, but could hang around for longer.

Actually, I AM ovulating. I didn't realize it would be THIS painful though. I don't remember it happening last month...

I have heard of people actually deciding to wean b/c the pain of BF during ovulation was too much. I haven't had AF return yet, but I figured I would ask. Not that it is my business. However, if it does pass in a day or two you'll at least be prepared next month!

I had similar pain and it was the yeast problem. My baby had to be on nystatin but more importantly I had to take Dyflucan for almost a full week before the pain went away. It was pain during nursing and sometimes even when I wasn't nursing.

I took baby spoons and stuck them in the freezer and let the kids suck on them. I also used popcycles. That seemed to help. Just do what works for you. Brandon and Kaitlyn nursed until they were 10 months old and that was enough for them.
